Documents for purchasing a donkey

All the steps involved in buying a donkey

Stable code (prerequisite)

  • Make sure you have a suitable place for keeping the animal. Find some general guidelines for setting up a barn here.
  • Contact by email or phone your province’s official veterinary service (USL) to request a barn code and wait for the issuance process (usually 5-7 working days).
  • In this video you can get more information about the Stable Code.

transfer of ownership

The transfer of ownership of the donkey is a procedure to be carried out by the seller, who must send the appropriate sale form with his or her own signature and that of the buyer to his or her provincial breeders’ association (APA).
The data that are requested from the new buyer are:
  • header data (first name, last name, date of birth, place of residence, social security number),
  • The barn code (of the new owner or keeper),
  • Photocopy (or scanner/photo) of ID, tax identification number (or Chamber of Commerce visas in case of company headers).
On the sale form the donkey is identified by its passport and microchip number. Once the transfer is completed, the new owner must go to the breeders’ association in his or her province to have the new header tag affixed to the passport.
Please note:
OWNER: the one who declares under civil and criminal liability and who is shown on the records to be the owner; he is identified by his tax identification number (or VAT no. if a legal figure).
DETENSEE: the person who keeps his or her own or a third party’s animals on his or her own farm (Stable Code); he or she is identified by his or her tax code.
Transferring ownership of the donkey and sending the necessary documentation can also be done remotely via email, WhatsApp or Chat.

Passport

Each donkey has a Passport (unique lifetime identification document) that must accompany the animal on every move.

Initially on the passport will be the microchip number implanted on the animal, signaling (sex, breed, coat, characteristic markings), date of birth, choice of the equine’s final destination, and the owner’s information.

Next, news regarding vaccinations, health treatments, transfers of ownership… should be reported.

equid database

Donkeys, like horses, are registered in the Equine Registry of the BDN (national database) of the Ministry of Health, which is entrusted to the CSN (National Animal Registry Service Center), which created and manages the Veterinary Information System portal.

This portal vetinfo.it provides a series of public services such as news, references to current legislation, and constitutes, the single access point for institutional entities (asl, breeders’ association, etc.), companies and operators in the sector (breeders, veterinarians, etc.) who use it in various capacities through the specific functionalities.

To get information about the donkey (age, breed, etc.) you can go to vetinfo.co .uk, section: “Equines.” Here you can enter the microchip of the chosen animal (transponder number) and have its public information.

A call center and help desk (8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays) has been set up to assist industry professionals in consulting and entering information in the Livestock Registry and other Information Systems accessible from the Veterinary Information System Portal at toll-free number 800 08 22 80.
